Places in China: Jinlin Province

Formerly a part of Manchuria along with Liaoning and Heilongjiang, Jilin Province lies next to two foreign countries, Russia and North Korea. The province has both industrial cities and beautiful natural settings. The name of the province is sometimes shortened to "Ji".

This province is far to the north in China and therefore has short and wet summers followed by long and very cold winters. Changbaishan is a volcanic nature reserve and the home to a number of unusual animals and plants. Changbaishan is listed as an area of special interest by the U.N.

Being on the North Korean border, much of the population is Korean. Two-thirds of the Korean ethnic population in China live in Jilin Province, especially in the cities of Jilin City and Changchun along with some villages near to the Korean border.

Many caves, sand dunes and pagodas are of special interest to visitors to Jilin Province. The capital city of the province, Changchun, is known as the 'motor city' of China as well as being involved in the beginning of modern film making in the country.

Jilin's 187,400 square kilometres of land area supports a population of nearly twenty-seven million people. This make it the most populous of China's provinces.

The longest river in Jilin Province is the Songhua River. The province is mostly hills and plains, especially in the northwest and centre. Mountains in the province include the Changbai Mountains (the black earth mountains) and Zhangguangcai Mountain.

The Jilin Province is one of the best grain producing regions of China. It is also the home of First Automobile Works, one of China's most important car manufacturers. The province produces good pine timber as well as three products which China values highly, mink, pilose antler and ginseng.

Winter sports are quite popular in this province with longer and colder winters. An Ice Lantern Spectacle draws visitors as well during the coldest days of winter. Ski resorts and winter sport tourism are important to Jilin.

Jilin's past involved habitation by loosely-federated tribes until the 1600s when the Manchu set up a military government in the town of Jilin, which became the name of the province. Jilin became a province in 1907 although it was conquered and occupied by Japanese in the 1930s.

The per-capita income and literacy rates in Jilin are higher than the average in China.
