Places in China: Jiangxi Province
The landlocked province of Jiangxi is south of the famed Yangtze River, north of Guangdong Province and northwest of Fujian Province. It is considered subtropical since it is so far south in China. Winter temperatures seldom reach the freezing point.
Sometimes the province is referred to as Gan since the Gan River runs through it. The name Jiangxi actually has the meaning of River West.
Refuge from the summer heat is found at resorts on the Lushan Mountains. Also, Poyang Lake in the northern part of the province, the largest freshwater lake in China, gives a source of cooler recreation.
Forty million people occupy the 166,000 square kilometres of land area in Jiangxi Province. The population density in the province ranks sixteenth with 267 persons per square kilometre. Over ninety-nine percent of the population is Han Chinese. A tiny minority made up of She, Hui, Yao and Miao represent the other less than one percent.
A portion of the Grand Canal was constructed in Jiangxi Province in the seventh century. This helped to bring prosperity to the province until the early twentieth century when the Canal and the province began losing importance in the area.
The province has been losing many of its young people to neighbouring prosperous trade areas and special economic zones. Jiangxi is one of the country's major producers of grain. Forests cover over fifty percent of the province. Extensive plains are found in the middle of the province with several mountains surrounding them.
The city of Jingdezhen began producing high-quality porcelain as early as 220 BC during the Han Dynasty and is still a showplace for porcelain. The telltale blue and white plates, cups and saucers, which seem to identify Chinese porcelain, began during the Ming Dynasty of 1368 to 1644.
In 1927, Jiangxi was an important area because it was where the Communists and Nationalists competed for the control of China. One high point in the competition was the Nanchang Uprising of 1927. Soon after that, the Communists were forced into the hills. The PLA or Red Army was founded in the mountains near Jinggangshan, and the Long March began across China.
Nanchang is the capital of the province and is a good place to visit due to the many attractions in the city. Several other cities also have quality attractions which bring visitors into the province.
