This province surrounds two municipalities in China, that of Tianjin and that of Beijing, the capital of the country. Being in northeastern China in the North China Plain, the province experiences rather cool winters and warm summers. The four seasons are distinct in Hebei Province with July and August being the hottest months of the year.
The Yellow River (Huang He) feeds this province. This explains the name of the province since Hebei means River North. Bordering provinces include Inner Mongolia, Henan, Shandong and Shanxi.
The GDP of Hebei Province ranks sixth in the nation. Being next to Tianjin and Beijing helps to create wealth for the province. One of China's major coal mines is within the province, Kailuan. Steel and textile production are strong elements within Hebei. With the watershed of the Yellow River and the North China Plain, agriculture is well-defined in the province as well.
Hebei ranks sixth in population numbers among the provinces in China with a total of over sixty-eight million people. A population density of 363 persons per square kilometre causes the province to rank eleventh in the nation. It is the twelfth largest province in land area with its nearly 79,000 square miles.
The capital city of the province, Shijiazhuang, is about one hundred fifty miles from Beijing. It is situated in a more southern part of Hebei Province. It is a prosperous and fast-growing city and acts as a hub of the national railway network. The military academy of the Chinese army is located in this city as is the country's largest pharmaceutical company.
Another popular city in the province is Zhengding which is home to a large copper Buddha statue as well as the oldest monastery in China.
When the PRC was founded, the province was enlarged by the addition of Zhangjiakou and part of Chengde. This brought the province north to the Great Wall and to the north of the North China Plain.
