Places in China: Guangxi Zhungzu Autonomous Region

For ethnic diversity, Guanxi beckons people who study ethnic groups. Over one third of the people of this province are Chinese minorities. Of course, Han Chinese have the largest number although Zhuang make up thirty-two percent of the population of the region. Other ethnic groups in the province include Yao, Miao, Dong and Gelao along with smaller minorities such as Tong, Mulam, Maonan, Yi, Shui, Jing and Hui.

The population of Guangxi is nearly forty-nine million people. The population density is twentieth in the nation at 207 persons per kilometre. The cultural diversity is one of the attractions for tourism in the province.

Just as the population, the landscape is quite diverse in this region. High mountains in the north and northeast sections give way to hills and plains and finally to the Tonkin Gulf in the southwest. Caves, hills and beautiful rock formations add significant beauty to the Guangxi Region.

The natural resources in Guangxi include manganese ore, coal deposits, tin and iron. Some crude oil has also been discovered in the Gulf of Tonkin. Fishing and forestry are important elements in the province's income. About fifteen percent of the industry in the province is due to farming. Because of the natural beauty, tourism is looming larger on the revenue-producing scene in Guangxi.

In spite of the popularity of the province, its next-door-neighbour, Guangdong outdoes Guangxi in industry and sea-based trading. In the distant past, Guangxi included more area than it now has. Among parts of Guangxi in the past was Guangdong Province.

Guangxi Province officially became a part of China in 214 BC although it was not officially known as Guangxi until after 1279. It became an official autonomous region in 1958 when Zhou Enlai recommended the change.

There are a few cities within the province with attractions which attract tourists. One of those is the capital of the province, Nanning. Many of those attractions include either caves or peaks.

Sub-tropical weather is common in Guangxi hot and humid summers and mild winters. There is monsoon disturbance as well in the province.
