China Information » Information » Effects of Income Disparity in China's Regions Effects of Income Disparity in China's RegionsThe government of China is working very hard to create wealth for its citizens with its focus on manufacturing and the encouragement of capitalism. It has become the third largest exporter in the world, following Germany and the United States. The Chinese government is looking inward to a great degree. In its attempts to create wealth for the Chinese, it has also influenced a reduction in poverty among much of China's large population. China is now even helping to reduce poverty outside its own borders by sending aid to African nations in need. ![]() This overall increase in income in China has reached many regions of the country. Still, an area of concern is the disparity of disposable income in various regions of China. It is commendable that general income has risen. Yet, the differences between the incomes of people on the eastern coast of the country are somewhat out of proportion to the incomes of those deep in the interior of the country. The Chinese concept of egalitarianism should help to eliminate the significant differences in the various parts of the nation. Of course, regional unemployment issues influence the income figures. The coastal regions have lower unemployment figures than rural areas of the country. Thus, the coastal areas of the country have higher personal income figures. Any country which is changing to a market economy will surely have more differences in income. When a country has a surplus of available workers who are not employed, some will become financially better off more quickly than others. This should encourage the less fortunate to put more effort into getting in on the wealth. The idea of letting a few people become financially healthy earlier than others needs to be balanced with egalitarian ideas. In China, the wealth of most is increasing, but the rural dwellers are getting a smaller portion of the nation's increased income. China has been using subsidized housing and other benefits mostly in urban areas recently. Such measures encourage rural residents to decide to move to the cities to enjoy such benefits. This results in overpopulation in the coastal cities, making jobs harder to get. The coastal city regions of China have more modern facilities and higher standards of living. Yet, in the rural areas, China has greater mineral deposits to be harvested. The rich mineral deposits could bring greater income for rural areas if harvested. By moving to the coastal cities, rural people are adding to the problems of the country. The Chinese government is encouraging its poorer people to use the grants and relief money to invest in projects which will bring in income in the future. There are programs to help poor people start their own businesses. In spite of a decrease in state finances due to fiscal decentralization, the government is pursuing ongoing programs to help the poor to get out of their poverty.
