China Information » Information » The Emergence of China as a Global Power The Emergence of China as a Global PowerThe days of viewing the People's Republic of China as a third world country are quickly coming to an end. This giant country is quickly becoming a significant global power, a rival for the trend-setting countries which have ruled for some time, especially in the areas of manufacturing, engineering and marketing of products.Of course, economic and political points of view in China have necessarily been modified in order to see the advance of the country on the world stage. Old Chinese ideas are being rejected, such ideas as competition for profit being considered bad. Capitalism, even if not referred to by that name, is becoming a strong force in the country. ![]() For some time, the Chinese were seen largely as a great outsourcing resource for western countries. Labour was, and still is, quite cheap in China. Thus, sending raw materials to China to be assembled and returned to the western companies was a natural element in the manufacturing world. Although the Chinese workers did not make much profit from this outsourcing scheme, some higher-level administrators in China made good profits. Changes are beginning to take place in the picture now. The Chinese companies are beginning to see themselves in a different light. Instead of making small profits as outsourcing suppliers, they have begun producing their own products to sell in the global marketplace. Although it is riskier, becoming both manufacturers and marketers is more economically feasible for factory owners in China. Modern, western-style production lines are replacing the slower shops which use hand-produced methods. Working around the clock with several shifts of workers, companies can put out tremendous numbers of products. This makes each product less costly than handcrafted products while making the product available for sale in more places. Using the slow one-at-a-time methods allows for only a small number of products to be produced each day. Using modern production line methodology allows for hundreds of thousands of identical products to be produced each day. These larger numbers of products can be shipped all over the country, or in some cases all over the world, to be displayed and sold. This means a lot more profit for the Chinese manufacturer than simply being paid a sum for outsourcing services. For some Chinese businessmen, another welcome idea is that of merging with a well-known western company. This idea appears profitable for both sides if the situation. The well-known western company acquires products which have been produced by a lower-paid labour force while the Chinese business gets more worldwide acceptance because of the name recognition of the western product. In time, some of the cultural areas of concern should disappear. The Chinese workers usually have not been taught to think creatively and make suggestions to their superiors. The Chinese culture has considered the worker as under subjection to those above him. He is not expected to challenge his boss but to accept what the boss expects of him. The idea of respect for one's elders makes it more difficult to think independently and question the boss. This is one area which will likely change, even if the change is slow. Changes in the sometimes ancient ways of thinking will help China make rapid advances on the world stage, not only in manufacturing and marketing its products but also its political, economic and human rights points of view. There is little doubt that China has been a sleeping giant which is awakening. There is no doubt that this giant will become one of the strongest of global powers.
